- Nowhere is more peaceful than Venice in the early morning. The gondolas are moored looking over the canal to the Islands and the sun is rising and creating tremendously interesting lights and colours in the skies. Oil Pastels and soft or chalk pastels are a wonderful medium to capture vivid colours and that's why I used them here in a very loose sort of fashion. The formation of the gondolas make a beautiful design and the sun shining on the blue canopies forms a harmonious accent to the blue of the canal facing the blue lagoon and being picked up again in the blues of the sky. The underside of the gondolas coupled with the reds in the skies, form an interesting and dramatic contrast to the colder blues of the sky and water.
