- Around November, the rains start to fall heavily on Venice creating, 'Aqua-Alta' where Venice floods. I have used very dull and muted colours to show the contrast a day like this can make in Venice; everything looks dark and dull, with heavy, dark clouds and black gondolas with no lights reflected in them, and dull, tall buildings looking disapprovingly on to the very wet scene of the overloaded canal coupled with torrential showers. I used fine texture to achieve this look, then added the rain afterwards with a special brush I made for the job. Applying very light grey dry acrylic paint to these few widely-separated brush hairs and lightly dusting the surface produced a very effective feeling of being caught up in Venice's rains.
